1st St. Mary’s Platt Scouts Visit
During the evening of 7 November, Scott Wishart, a member of the War Memorial steering group, visited the 1st St. Mary’s Platt Scouts to talk about WW1 and some of the names on the war memorial. For the occasion Scott donned 1902 Service Dress and discussed the various elements of the uniform to give the Scouts some idea of what the men from Platt who had enlisted would have been wearing at the start of the war. Then, using a map from 1915, Scott talked the children through the war up until that point 100 years ago to illustrate how mobile warfare quickly became static (trench) warfare. He also discussed the role that scouts themselves played in WW1 before recounting stories of local men who saw overseas service in both World Wars. Several of which quite literally left the Scouts speechless and inspired a number of very good and poignant questions.
