The 1911 UK census was taken on 2 April and is particularly poignant as it was the last census taken before the start of the First World War, and consequently records all the men and women who served overseas, but did not return. More generally it is a fascinating snapshot of the country at a point in time before it changed forever. Like many small parishes, the large majority of eligible men from Platt saw active service between 1914-18, with over 200 individuals known to have participated in the war. Many of those are listed here, some for the last time.

We have transcribed the entire census returns for the parish and have provided a searchable index below which gives basic details of all 1,150 people living in St. Mary’s Platt, Wrotham Heath, Crouch, Basted and Claygate Cross. Further details of marital status, duration of current marriage, number of children born within that marriage, number of living children and the number of any children who had died are also available in a PDF transcript of the census, which can be viewed by clicking the button below the table.
