An Evening with Paul Atterbury

On 11 October we were visited by Antiques Roadshow regular Paul Atterbury who gave a fascinating talk about the life of H. G. Murphy, the local silversmith who designed our war memorial, and also told some amusing stories from the television programme. Murphy was important to the development of silver objects and jewellery during the 1920’s and 30’s, and following his death just before the start of WWII became something of a forgotten name until Paul and John Benjamin wrote a book that returned his reputation as a main player on the scene who influenced so many others in his field.

In addition to Paul’s talk, some of the research carried out on the war memorial names was displayed in the hall for visitors to read.
